Can WWE Book No Mercy Correctly?

by Phil Canavan on September 24, 2016

Smackdown have already had their first PPV entitled Backlash a few weeks ago and now we are on the road to No Mercy. With just two weeks to go, we have three matches announced which is pretty good going by WWE’s standards but now that they’ve got four full weeks to build to a PPV can it be done correctly?

WWE World Championship: AJ Styles (c) vs. Dean Ambrose vs. John Cena
So this is the match that is to headline the show and while it may look good on paper, there are a few things wrong with the way it’s been booked. Two weeks ago Styles defeated Ambrose to win that WWE World Championship so Ambrose having his rematch makes perfect sense. All of a sudden John Cena pops out of nowhere and is in the main event. The biggest issue I have is that after No Mercy, Cena is off filming a new season of his TV show so he won’t be around. That screams that he won’t walk out the champion. Was this a case of just changing up the match so it’s not same headline act two months on the run due to lack of depth, were previously they had a larger main event scene.

WWE Smackdown Women’s Championship: Becky Lynch (c) vs. Alexa Bliss
The women’s division went through a major change but it makes no sense to me why Becky Lynch is on Smackdown when the rest of the division is screaming ‘DIVA’. I can see Becky retaining here to create a decent first championship reign and a decent entry for the record books. The division is just too weak at the minute compared to the RAW side.

WWE Smackdown Tag Team Championships: Heath Slater and Rhyno (c) vs. The Usos (Jimmy Uso and Jey Uso)
I love the fact that The USO’s have turned heel and it gives them a new dimension. As a long time face team the act was stale and they were losing fans but now they have an evil streak and it’s great to see. As we know Slater and Rhyno is not a real tag team and was just ground to get Slater onto Smackdown and create hype for the new belts. The Usos are probably gonna win here and then they can recreate a great tag team division. It’s all about how they build this match now!
